Chapter 9

I found I was excited to attend Scooter’s soccer game. He was one of the best kids on the team, which meant he got a lot of playing time. Sports were his strength, where academia was Alex’s, and I enjoyed being on the sidelines cheering him on as he excelled at this very physical activity. That didn’t mean I wasn’t planning to take a moment to speak to Maria, but it did mean I’d wait for a break in the action to do so.

“Did you see that goal?” Alex asked as she jumped up and down, clapping and yelling.

“I did,” I answered. “I thought for sure it was going to go wide and then it curved back toward the center.”

“This is such a close game. I can’t help but be nervous for Scooter.”

“Yeah, me too. He’s been so excited for this tournament. I know he’s put in extra practice time with Zak.”

“And his hard work paid off. He’s doing so awesome.”

“He really is.” I hugged Alex. “We’ll have to have a celebratory dinner after the game.” I glanced at the scoreboard and game clock. “It’s going to be half time in a few minutes. I need to speak to Tommy’s mom. Can you run over and remind Zak to get the orange slices for the kids out of the ice chest?”

Alex looked to where Zak was chatting with one of the other dads. “Yeah, okay. Zak brought bottled water too.”

I watched Alex trot away, then turned to locate Maria just as the referee blew the whistle signaling halftime. She’d been chatting with one of the other mothers, but it looked like she was heading to the bathrooms, so I went in that direction.

“Scooter’s having the game of his life,” Maria commented as I got into line behind her.

“He really is doing well. Tommy too. I can tell he’s serious about proving he deserves a spot in the starting lineup. It was fortunate you were able to get tonight off.”

“I asked for the night off as soon as I found out about the tournament. The new manager isn’t as flexible as the previous one was. It isn’t easy to get extra time off beyond what’s allotted in your regular schedule.”

“It seems like a lot of the old staff has moved on to other jobs since the ownership change.”

“Almost half the current employees are new,” Maria confirmed. “The new manager is a stickler for procedure and structure. I think the employees who quit felt like they weren’t given the appreciation and consideration they deserved. There are times I feel like an employee number who fills a shift rather than a person with needs and desires of my own. If I could find another job that would pay as well, I’d quit in a minute.”

I waved at one of the other mothers on Scooter’s team and then continued. “I noticed when I was there on Monday that you’re in the kitchen now.”

“Yes, but not by choice. I’d rather be on the floor, but they said the kitchen was where they needed me.
